Fioricet is a brand name for a combination of acetaminophen, butalbital, and caffeine. It’s used to treat tension headaches; it’s also sometimes used to treat migraines as well. Butalbital is a barbiturate, a class of prescription sedatives. Because of their risk of overdose and addiction, barbiturates have largely been phased out of common use.
Like all barbiturates, building up a tolerance to Fioricet can occur rapidly. Fioricet abuse can create feelings of intense relaxation and euphoria, but at a terrible price. Fioricet is easy to fatally overdose on, extremely addictive, and barbiturate withdrawal is among the hardest to get through.
Recovery from Fioricet abuse must be done in a clinical detox setting for safety.
