The brand name for methaqualone, Quaaludes were prescription sedatives. Intended as a sedative and muscle relaxant, Quaaludes became a club drug during the 1970s. Production of these stopped in the US during the 80s due to concerns over widespread abuse.
Quaalude abuse is rare these days largely because the drug is no longer made. Illicit drugs claimed to be Quaaludes these days are likely to be benzodiazepines or simply fake. Worse, pills purchased on the street or in clubs may be tainted with fentanyl.
